ECLIPSE – Exoplanets , climates and planetary systems evolution

Research

Until the end of the 1990s, planetary science was based on our knowledge of the solar system planets and small bodies. Today thousands of planets have been found around other stars in our galactic neighbourhood. Orbiting single or multiple stars, old or young, they display a broad variety of architectures and host planets with composition and physcial conditions that can depart dramatically from those found in the solar system.

Within Eclipse, we study this diversity of extrasolar worlds in order to understand the mecansims controlling their formation, structure, evolution, atmosphere, climate and habitability. Our research is organized in 5 main topics:

Convergent migration of giant planet cores.
Pierens et al., A&A, 2013

Formation and evolution of planetary systems

Models of planet formation and orbital evolution must explain the properties of the solar system as well as those – very diverse – observed around other stars (single /binaries, solar or non-solar, brown dwarfs). To that purpose, we develop different types of simulation codes: robust hydrodynamics models to simulate the growth an dmigration of planets embedded in evolving protoplanetary discs, and N-body models to follow the long-term orbital evolution of the systems after the dissipation of the disk. Beyond the theoretical exploration of planetary system properties, these models also allow us to exploit transit and radial velocity observations, to confirm the nature of observed planetary systems or to refine their characterization by studying their stability and planet-planet interactions.

Modeling planetary atmospheres

We study exoplanet atmospheres and climates. We are in particular interested in the influence of the host star and the other planets in the system through the spectrum and intensity of the stellar irradiation, the tides, the evolution of the orbit and the rotation. We develop models to simulate the physical, dynamical and chemical structure of an atmosphere, as well as the associated observable (spectra in transmission, emission, reflection, orbital photometry). We address all the variety of exoplanets. We study the climate of potentially habitable worlds (terrestrial planets able to host surface liquid water), which are today beyond the reach of characterization but also the atmosphere of hot and massive planets (hot Jupiters/Neptunes) for which observationnal data are already available. Our models are used to interprete current observations but also to prepare observations that will be done with future instruments (JWST, ARIEL, E-ELT, SPICA, WFIRST).

Exoplanet detection and characterization

Science_K186f

Our team participated in the discovery of Kepler 186 f,
the first Earth-sied exoplanet found in the habitable zone of its star.

Modeling and observations are tightly connected within our group. We are involved in several exoplanet searches including ground-based radial velocity program (Sophie, HARPS) and space-based transit surveys (Kepler, K2, Spitzer, Plato). With these observations, we look for terrestrial planets around brown dwarfs, M stars, binary stars and within systems with debris disks.

In addition, we believe that the spectral and photometric characterization of exoplanet atmospheres will become one of the major challenge in exoplanetary science of the next decade(s). In this context, we use our modeling and analysis tools to contribute to this field and define new methods and instruments.

Rotating fluids

We model the structure and morphology of fluid systems with high angular momemtum (stars, disks, planets) by accounting for most of the relevant mecanisms/properties such as rotation, equation of state, chemistry, turbulence, convection, self-gravity, irradiation, magnetic field. We develop specific simulation tools in order to understand and quantify the link between rotation, distortion, mass distribution and associated observable signatures. We study new techniques to calculate the gravitational field and potential within these systems (smoothing length, multigrid methods).

rings

Toroidal rings modeled with a polytropic equation of state and a self-consistent calculation of the gravitational field. These structures are similar to those recently identified with ALMA in a protoplanetary disk.

The origins and evolution of Life on Earth and in the Universe

What is the link between the formation of the solar system and the emergence of life more than 3.5 billion years ago In order to contribute to this key scientific question, we coordinate an European COST action (ORIGINS, PI: M. Gargaud) dedicated to related topics : Where, when and how did life emerge and evolve on Earth? What are the conditions under which life can exist? Does life exist elsewhere in the Universe and, if it does, how can it be detected and identified? Our team is involved in the 5 working groups of this COST (Planetary systems and habitable planets, Origins of the bricks of life, Early Earth and the limits of life, Life elsewhere in the Universe, Philosophy of the origins of life) as well as in the public outreach and the training of graduate students (through 8 winter/summer schools in 4 yrs).
