L’étude des planètes reposait jusqu’à la fin des années 90 sur les seules données issues de notre système solaire et de ses huit planètes. Aujourd’hui les planètes se comptent par milliers au sein de centaines de systèmes planétaires identifiés dans notre voisinage galactique. En orbite autour d’étoiles simples ou multiples, ces systèmes sont de tous types et de tous âges. Ils présentent des architectures très variées et abritent une grande diversité de planètes dont les compositions et conditions physiques sont radicalement différentes de celles rencontrées dans le système solaire.

Au sein de l’équipe ECLIPSE, nous étudions cette pluralité des mondes extrasolaires afin de comprendre les mécanismes qui contrôlent leur formation, leur structure, leur évolution, mais aussi leur atmosphère, leur climat et leur éventuelle habitabilité. Notre recherche s’oriente en particulier selon cinq axes.

La formation/évolution des systèmes planétaires

Modéliser la formation et l’évolution dynamique des systèmes planétaires a pour but d’expliquer à la fois l’architecture du Système Solaire et la diversité observée des systèmes exoplanétaires (autour d’étoiles de type solaire ou non, de naines brunes, d’étoiles binaires). Dans ce but, nous développons d’une part des codes hydrodynamiques robustes pour simuler la croissance et la migration de planètes au sein de disques protoplanétaires. D’autre part, nous pouvons suivre, grâce à des simulations à N corps, l’évolution d’un système sur le long terme après la dissipation du disque. Ces modélisations permettent en outre d’exploiter au mieux les observations de vitesses radiales et transits, de confirmer la nature des systèmes planétaires observés et d’en raffiner la compréhension par l’étude de leur stabilité et des interactions entre planètes.

 

 

La modélisation des atmosphères d’exoplanètes

Nous étudions les atmosphères et climats exoplanétaires, en nous intéressant en particulier à l’influence de l’étoile hôte et des autres planètes du système : spectre et intensité de l’irradiation stellaire, effets de marée, évolution de l’orbite et de la rotation. Nous développons pour cela des modèles permettant de simuler la structure physico-chimique et dynamique d’une atmosphère, ainsi que les observables associées (spectres en transmission, émission, réflexion ; photométrie orbitale). Nos travaux portent sur toute la gamme des exoplanètes. Cela inclut les planètes potentiellement habitables, c’est-à-dire les planètes telluriques tempérées pouvant abriter de l’eau liquide à leur surface et qui ne sont pour l’instant accessibles qu’à la détection. A l’autre extrême de cette diversité, les exoplanètes très chaudes et massives (Jupiters et Neptunes chauds) constituent des objets importants dans notre travail, car leur atmosphère peut être sondée par les observations. Outre l’étude des différents types d’atmosphères/climats et de leurs propriétés ces modèles permettent d’interpréter les observations actuelles et de préparer les observations avec les futurs instruments.

Détection et caractérisation des exoplanètes

la première exoplanète de taille terrestre trouvée
dans la zone habitable de son étoile.

La recherche menée au sein d’ECLIPSE se situe à l’interface entre modélisation et observation des exoplanètes. Nous sommes impliqués dans plusieurs programmes de détection d’exoplanètes, depuis le sol par vitesse radiale (Sophie, HARPS) et depuis l’espace par transit (Kepler, K2, Spitzer, Plato). Dans ces programmes nous traquons les planètes telluriques autour de naines brunes, d’étoiles M, d’étoiles binaires ou dans des systèmes présentant un disque de débris.

Par ailleurs, la caractérisation spectroscopique et photométrique des atmosphères d’exoplanètes va représenter un des grands enjeux de l’astrophysique de la prochaine décennie, et nous utilisons nos outils de modélisation et d’analyse des données pour participer à cette discipline nouvelle et définir les méthodes et instruments à venir (JWST, E-ELT, Spirou, ARIEL, SPICA, WFirst).

L’étude des systèmes fluides en rotation

Nous explorons les propriétés structurelles et morphologiques des systèmes fluides à fort moment angulaire (étoiles, disques, planètes), incluant des mécanismes variés (rotation différentielle, équations d’état, chimie, turbulence, transport convectif, auto-gravité, irradiation, champ magnétique). Nous développons des outils de simulation numérique spécifiques permettant de comprendre le lien entre rotation, déformation, distribution de masse et les signatures observables associées. Nous nous intéressons aux techniques de calcul du champ et potentiel gravitationnels de ces systèmes (longueur de lissage, méthodes multigrilles).

Modélisation d’anneaux toroïdaux décrits par une équation d’état polytropique et avec un calcul autocohérent du potentiel gravitationnel. Ces structures sont analogues à celles récemment identifiées avec ALMA dans un disque protoplanétaire.

Les origines de la vie sur Terre et dans l’Univers

L’une des grandes questions auxquelles la science essaie de répondre concerne le lien entre la formation du Système Solaire et l’émergence du vivant il y a plus de 3.5 milliards d’années et son évolution. L’équipe a récemment obtenu une action européenne COST sur ce thème (lien), dont l’objectif est de fédérer l’Europe autour de deux grandes questions : Où, quand, comment la vie est-elle apparue sur Terre? Peut-il y avoir de la vie ailleurs dans l’Univers et si oui comment faire pour la détecter ?

L’équipe est impliquée dans les 5 groupes de travail de cette action (Systèmes planétaires et planètes habitables, Origine des briques du vivant, Terre primitive et limites du vivant, Vie ailleurs dans l’Univers, Histoire et philosophie des origines de la Vie) ainsi que dans la formation des doctorants et la diffusion des connaissances (via notamment 8 écoles d’été en 4 ans).

Franck Selsis étudie les atmosphères planétaires et en particulier celles d’exoplanètes, en lien avec la formation et l’histoire dynamique des planètes et l’influence de leur étoile. Ce travail se base sur des modèles numériques qui permettent d’explorer la diversité des atmosphères mais aussi d’interpréter des observations spectroscopiques ou photométriques. Il s’intéresse au concept d’habitabilité et de zone habitable, cherchant à identifier les planètes susceptibles d’abriter des conditions compatibles avec la présence de vie.

Pascal Bordé travaille sur la détection d’exoplanètes, ainsi que sur la mesure de leurs propriétés physiques et orbitales. Pour cela, il analyse des observations réalisées avec des télescopes dans l’espace (notamment Corot & Kepler) ou au sol. Les objectifs sont (1) de comprendre en profondeur les mécanismes de formation et d’évolution des planètes, notamment dans le cas de notre Système solaire, et (2) d’aller au-delà de la mesure bien maîtrisée des caractéristiques macroscopiques de ces astres (masse, rayon, orbite…) pour passer à l’analyse détaillée de leur composition atmosphérique, de leurs conditions de surface, de leur relation avec leur étoile, et de déterminer ainsi leur potentielle habitabilité.

Jeremy Leconte s’intéresse à la physique des planètes et des étoiles—qu’elles soient au sein ou en dehors de notre système solaire. En particulier, il étudie la structure et l’évolution de leurs intérieurs, la dynamique de leurs atmospheres, et le couplage entre ces derniers et la dynamique orbitale du système planétaire dans son ensemble. Pour cela, il utilise tout une gamme d’outils analytiques et numériques, allant jusqu’au développement de modèles de climats globaux 3D permettant de simuler la grande diversité des atmosphères d’exoplanètes. Dans un futur proche, son but et de tenter de faire le lien entre ces modèles 3D d’atmosphères et les observations spectroscopiques d’exoplanètes à venir.
